FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How old should my child be to start guitar lessons?
The youngest we recommend starting is 7 years old, but every child is unique. We can let you know whether it's better for your child to wait, or if they can get started right away, during their free introductory lesson.
Should I get an acoustic or an electric guitar to start lessons?
In our experience, the best guitar for your child is the one that is most in line with the music they like to listen to and/or want to play on guitar.
If your child likes listening to rock or heavy metal, the best option would be to start on electric guitar.
If your child likes different genres, or is still exploring which genres they prefer, an acoustic guitar is the way to go. We also recommend acoustic guitars for folk and top-40/pop.
Either way, guitar playing skills are transferrable from electric to acoustic, and vice-versa. The most important thing is to get started!
Should I get my child a learn-to-play guitar app?
We don't recommend mobile apps -- especially for new players -- because they aren't able to provide any feedback on your child's playing.
Mobile apps are convenient and can deliver new content on demand, but they have ZERO support to actually help your child learn to play. It just shows them more and more things to learn, which can quickly lead to feeling overwhelmed. To top it off, your child is left all alone to figure out how to actually play their guitar by themselves.
You don't want them to go through the painful process of trial-and-error. Or worse, quit playing guitar completely.
The fastest way to learn is to take lessons with a qualified guitar teacher who is trained to teach young players in an engaging way that keeps them playing and learning!
Why don't online lessons work?
It's easy enough to find free guitar lessons online.
But... where do you start? And more importantly, what does your child need to stay engaged and enthusiastic about the learning process?
Free online lessons aren't tailored to your child's specific needs. They are generic lessons that are meant to appeal to as wide of an audience as possible, many of whom are adults. There's no structure, it's just loose bits of information. And like mobile apps, your child is still left by themselves to figure out how to actually PLAY their guitar -- they get no feedback or guidance on their playing.
At the end of the day, it leaves kids feeling lost, frustrated, and disappointed.
The better option is to get a teacher who will create a structured, organized plan to help them step-by-step to become a better guitar player... And have fun in the process!
